We hear often from business experts that it is necessary to plan, focus, and develop our sales and marketing strategies to effectively win new business. Laurie Soper, author of "Red Wine & Popcorn: Doing Business Like a Bohemian" (ISBN 1-894933-63-X) disagrees. In her opinion, these arduous efforts often result in very little payoff, while relaxing and letting her business evolve organically has resulted in a thriving enterprise. And she is happy as a lark.
So, what's a Bohemian, anyway? It's current meaning refers to an artist, writer or other person that defies convention. Someone who challenges the status quo, rules of behaviour, and accepted wisdom. "This describes the concepts in this book", explains Soper. "To successfully do business as a Bohemian you need to adopt an attitude of gratitude, respond instead of plan, cultivate your visions and passions, and most of all luxuriate in relationships with other people and yourself."
This delightful yet insightful book offers the following "non-strategies" such as:
- Grow your business by doing what comes easy
- Slow down and watch the referrals roll in
- Become your own model client
- The Columbo Factor
- Let your clients raise your rates for you
- Give your money away - and watch it come back to you.
Red Wine & Popcorn is filled with humourous examples from Soper's own experience. Along with the bounty of business advice, readers will learn how to build their own brand of Bohemian wealth while having the time of their life.

Mortgages for Business, the specialist in buy-to-let mortgages, says that the new guidelines and standards only reflect and reinforce measures that many lenders have already put in place.
There are currently only a small group of buy-to-let lenders who will lend on new-build properties and they have already put stringent measures into place to ensure the buy-to-let mortgages offered reflect the true property valuation.
Jonathan Moore, Head of Marketing at Mortgages for Business said: "There is currently an oversupply of new-build apartments, particularly in city centres, leading to concerns over property valuation and achievable rents. This has meant already cautious lenders are increasingly refusing to lend to this property type."

Yet the reality is that big box retailers don't have the expertise that a traditional music store would have.
MusicFactoryDirect.com was just recently launched in February 2009. The website bridges the gap between the know-how of independent instrument shops owned and operated by musicians and high quality retailers.
